RWANDAN
GENOCIDE
EXHIBIT
additional information
There are artifcats included in the exhibit that are not shown virtually. Here is a further explanation of the floor plan as well as additional explanations of the artifacts. Upon entrance and exit, the timeline will be provided to sum up the events that have taken place up to the point of the start of the civil war. Vistors will enter right and will see images before the genocide on Wall A. They will then continue to see images on Wall B, consisting of images during the war. Wall C contains tangible artifacts. These artifacts include the machettes used to slaughter thousands, along with the rags given to refugees. A wooden cross is also on display, a symbol of the sad excuse for a gravestone of the few who actually did obtain a burial. Wall D will include similar images to Wall B. Finally, the left side of Wall A will be more positive images of the aftermath of the war, leaving veiwers with a more positive rebuilding of Rwanda. There is a seperate room with a video projection of a documentary of Rwanda. Due to the brutal nature of this gruesome civil war, the choice is yours whether or not to watch the movie.
"From April to July 1994, members of the Hutu ethnic majority in the east-central African nation of Rwanda murdered as many as 800,000 people, mostly of the Tutsi minority. Begun by extreme Hutu nationalists in the capital of Kigali, the genocide spread throughout the country with staggering speed and brutality, as ordinary citizens were incited by local officials and the Hutu Power government to take up arms against their neighbors. By the time the Tutsi-led Rwandese Patriotic Front gained control of the country through a military offensive in early July, hundreds of thousands of Rwandans were dead and many more displaced from their homes. The RPF victory created 2 million more refugees (mainly Hutus) from Rwanda, exacerbating what had already become a full-blown humanitarian crisis."

“People here do not understand what happened in Rwanda. I hope people would like to know.”
